Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a kid. Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of the power of art as an instrument for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and brought up. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. In the year 1990 she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood California. DuVernay discovered a passion for journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her career began as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury as well as examine their junk. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999.
